Turlock Municipal Airport is somewhat unique - owned by the City of Turlock, yet located in Merced County, and operated since 2000 at no cost to City taxpayers by the TRAA. It began as Ballico Air Force Auxiliary Field - to train WWII pilots - and was administratively part of Merced Army Airfield (later known as Castle Air Force Base, now simply as Castle Airport). In 2000, the airport faced closure and a group of dedicated pilots gathered forces to keep the airport open and operating.
In 2000, the City of Turlock signed a management agreement with the newly-formed Turlock Regional Aviation Association (a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation, and a CalPilots chapter) to operate the Turlock Municipal Airport at no cost to city taxpayers. All are welcome to join as members of the TRAA; we elect a Board of Directors to 2-year terms, and all maintenance and operations are managed by TRAA Board members, volunteers and outside vendors.
The TRAA Board meets in the Pilot's Lounge, typically on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:00 PM. Our meetings are open, and everyone is welcome to join us.
